When to detox?

As well as deciding which detox programme is right for you, you must also establish when and how often you will detox. It is best to choose times when and you are able to rest and unwind in a natural environment. As such, weekends and holidays are ideal.

All of us would benefit from at least two longer detoxes every year; more if we are dealing with health challenges. When it comes to scheduling all this, it is wise to look not only at your own calendar, but also at a lunar calendar, as certain phases of the moon favour detoxification while others do not.

In the words of Johanna Paungger and Thomas Poppe in their book Moon Time: "The waning moon detoxifies and washes out, sweats out and breathes out, dries, consolidates, prompts to action and the expenditure of energy."

The body's capacity for detoxification is at its highest each month on the day of the new moon. Choosing to consume only juices or light meals of raw fruit and vegetables every new moon is a great health habit to get into. It is also advantageous to do this, or at least eat a very clean diet, on the day of the full moon, for the opposite reason: this is the day on which the body's capacity for absorption is at its highest.

Your two opportunities for super-powered detox

Each year there are two periods when your body's capacity for detoxification is greatest of all: the two equinoxes, spring and autumn. This knowledge has existed in all civilizations since ancient times, but it is largely lost in the modern world where it's possible - and not unusual - to live as if seasons did not exist.

If you want to help this process, at the very least make the equinoxes themselves - March 20 and October 22 - detox days. And if you are feeling extra motivated, remember that according to Chinese medicine, the window of opportunity extends ten days before and after each equinox.

1. Remove toxic foods that clog your body!
This seems pretty obvious yet most people have no idea which foods are actually toxic to their body. Start off by limiting (or ideally removing) dairy, refined sugar and starches, and stimulants like caffeine.

2. Alkalize your body
Incorporate more greens into your diet in order to raise the alkalinity level within your body. There are numerous benefits for doing so but none more important the simple fact that your blood needs to be slightly alkaline and that cancer does not grow in alkaline environments. Greens can come in the form of salads, green juices or smoothies, and superfoods like green barley grass or wheat grass.

Alkalizing foods are also the most cleansing for your body as they are very water-rich.

3. Drink plenty of water
Water is essential to flush out toxins. This is especially important if you are following a cleansing diet as many toxins will be coming out of hiding and may produce various detox symptoms. Water will quicken the removal of this "waste" and clean out your body's pipes.

4. Sweat it out!
One of the ways we detoxify is through sweat. Therefore, anything activity that will induce a good sweat is helpful. Working out, running, hot yoga, or even sitting in a sauna are great ways to open your pores and expel unwanted toxins.

5. Support your liver
The liver is the major detoxification organ in your body. Too often, most peoples' livers are heavily toxic due to poor diet food choices and other lifestyle stressors such as drinking, smoking, and high levels of stress.

Try starting your day with a glass of lemon water - a very good cleanser of the liver. Other liver supporting nutrients can be derived from drinking dandelion root tea and eating antioxidant rich foods like berries and pomegranate.

Why Cleanse?
