Lavender for Stress Relief and Insomnia

Many people appreciate lavender (Lavandula angustifolia or Lavandula officinalis) for its aromatic fragrance, used in soaps, shampoos, and sachets for scenting clothes.

Research is starting to confirm lavender's sedative qualities.

The studies with brain wave frequency have shown that smelling lavender increases alpha waves in the back of the head, which are associated with relaxation. It's been found to lengthen total sleep time, increase deep sleep, and make people feel refreshed.

It appears to work better for women, possibly because women tend to have a more acute sense of smell.

The good thing about lavender is that it begins to work quickly. Because of the convenience and ease of use that comes with it, lavender aromatherapy is an ideal stress relief tool.

Try putting a lavender sachet under your pillow or place one to two drops of lavender essential oil in a handkerchief. Or add several drops of lavender oil to a bath -- the drop in body temperature after a warm bath also helps with sleep.

Here are some of the ways you can use lavender aromatherapy for stress relief:

Lavender Aromatherapy Mist   - This convenient spray can be spritzed on pillows and bedding for a relaxing nighttime environment, on wrists for stress relief throughout the day, or in the air for a soothing space.

Lavender Aromatherapy Body Oil - This body oil can be applied in the morning after a shower (for a nice person scent throughout the day) or used in a bath (for a soothing get-ready-for-sleep experience).

very good article, I work on a lavender farm and we don't suffer from stress!

Thank you Sam for nice words. It must be great to be able to enjoy lavender scent alla naturale every single day. Ahhh...I think I can smell it, too! I just love lavender. Do you think it would be possible to grow my own lavender in a flower pot?
